Thanks to last year’s REEL Earth Day Challenge donors and sponsors, these restoration efforts are making a lasting impact! By closing unsanctioned trails, planting native species, and removing invasive plants, this project is helping protect sensitive ecosystems while improving visitor experiences.
Project Timeline & Highlights:
• January 2024: Site mapping and restoration planning began. The proposal was shared with xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band) for input.
• April: Funding secured through REEL Green Earth Day Challenge.
• May: Invasive species mapping kicked off.
• October (EcoBlitz): BCIT volunteers planted 200+ native trees & shrubs, closed unsanctioned trails, and removed 16 kg of English ivy.
• Follow-up event: Community volunteers planted 114 more trees & shrubs and cleared 59 kg of ivy!
• November: Contractors removed 15 cubic metres of English ivy and treated invasive holly & laurel to prevent regrowth.
These efforts are helping protect old-growth trees, restore forest soils, and promote biodiversity. Metro Vancouver Regional Parks staff will continue monitoring and maintaining the area to ensure long-term success!
Huge thanks to all volunteers, partners, and supporters for making this project possible!
