Thanks to the REEL Earth Day Challenge, a brand-new pond at Rowlatt Farmstead is bringing more life to Campbell Valley Regional Park!
In late July, excavation kicked off, repurposing organic soil for lush planting areas and using clay to build a sturdy new trail. Two culverts now improve water flow into the 1,760m² pond, which reaches over a metre deep at its center! Swales were sculpted to guide water, and an erosion sock protects the shoreline.
•922 native plants now surround the pond, including:
•32 towering trees
•460 vibrant shrubs
•150 colourful wildflowers
•280 water-loving rushes & sedges
A special shoutout goes to the Langley Christian School volunteers, who contributed 116 hours across two planting events! Huge thanks to Metro Vancouver staff for their 240+ hours of planning, planting, and coordination. And an extra-special thank you to the generous operator who donated weeks of time and machinery to make this happen!
This pond is now a thriving habitat for amphibians, insects, birds, and aquatic plants—boosting biodiversity and strengthening the park’s ecosystem.
